Volkswagen has unveiled the fourth-generation Caddy van as it looks to emulate the success of its predecessor.

The third-generation model sold more than 1.5m units across the globe and the German manufacturer will hope the latest iteration returns similar figures.

There are two bodystyles for the latest version, with the urban delivery van and passenger version both set for release later this year.

A 2.0-litre EU6 engine is available and brings with it improved efficiency and a range of different outputs.

At the top of the range sits the 148bhp version while the Blue Motion panel van is the most fuel efficient, returning 70mpg. EU5 diesel engines will also be available.

As well as a new engine line-up, the Caddy also comes with a wide range of driver technologies and electronic systems.

There is a ‘Front Assist’ system that provides automatic braking at low city speeds if an obstruction in the road is picked up by sensors.

A multi-collision brake system is also included as standard, as a way of combatting the statistic which says that 22 per cent of all accidents where injuries occur are caused by collisions with more than one obstacle.

For the first time ever, VW has also introduced Adaptive Cruise Control that uses sensors to monitor the distance between it and vehicles in front, slowing down or stopping dependent on the speed of other vehicles.

In terms of appearance, the Caddy has a more dynamic look than its predecessor with sharper lines and a new front and rear.

The Volkswagen Caddy will initially go on sale in Germany in June before arriving in the UK later in the year.

Prices and further specification details will be revealed closer to its launch date.
